A drug trial is a clinical trial where patients are given new not-yet-approved for general release drugs. The intention is to study the toxicity, or the appropriate dosage, or the drug's effect compared to drugs which are already approved for you. I would think the first person to talk to is your mother's medical oncologist. My husband was in an immunotherapy trial for three months. It didn't help him but some other patients in the trial saw some reduction in tumour size or their tumour stopped growing. It is a way of buying time.
