Dental trays that are being discussed are for patients who are getting radiation treatments. They are trays made for the patient so they are able to use flouride gel to treat their teeth. This helps to preserve them to avoid bigger dental problems down the road. I doubt your husband would need the dental trays at this time. He probably should have had them and used the thru out his radiation treatments. Now its after the fact.

As far as seeing the dental specialist, your husband will probably be examined and the dentist may attempt to make some type of denture for him. I hope this will work out and it will be a possibility. But it may not be an option. I still would recommend getting a second opinion prior to going with what the dentists advises. It can never hurt to hear what another specialist has to say.
