Oral cancer is very rare in teenagers regardless of tobacco use. Please do NOT pick up that habit again! For tobacco users its really only a matter of time before they develop some type of health problem from using tobacco.
From what I know about GERD, its very possible it is the cause of the symptoms you have described. If you are not comfortable with your current doctor and their diagnosis, seek out another Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist (ENT). Find one who treats oral cancer patients and see what they have to say. A biopsy of any sores you have had in your mouth for 2 or 3 weeks will tell you if its cancer or not.
