Great news about the PET scan! Seana asked:
how often in the future should he expect to have check ups?
My husband had physical checkups about every 2-3 months following the first pet scan with ENT, and every 5 months with his RO. He is 20 months post treatment, and will be seeing his ENT every 4-5 months for a physical check-up including an endoscopic examination of his throat.
and what type of examinations?
My husband also had a PET scan one year after the end of treatment. Unless he or the doctor see something worrisome, he will only be getting a chest x-ray at his 2 year anniversary. His doctor says that followup scans have been a hot topic at the conferences he has attended this year, and that, in absence of signs or symptoms, it is not necessary to subject the patient to more radiation than is needed. If the doctor is unsure of anything he or she finds in a physical exam, they schedule some sort of followup. A physical exam conducted by a skilled specialist who is looking for trouble is a powerful disagnostic tool.
