I think Kelly has pretty much explained it correctly.

My dad developed Grade 3 Oral Mucositis and RO said that he will watch for 3 more days with strong dose of antibiotics (for his oral infection) and pain meds while radiation will continue. In worst case, RO was prepared to get him hospitalized and continue radiation. In my dad's case, he has so far discouraged any breaks.
