Donnajean........Your husband will eat again, he really will. And more than likely he'll gain back every pound he lost too. It just takes time, and sometimes lots of time. Still, it's hard for the caretaker to watch this happen because your role is to "fix" and make things better. Sometimes you just can't. I know this part of recovery was very difficult for both my husband and mother in law to watch--they felt so helpless. Hell, I felt helpless...but no matter what, I just could not put anything into my oral cavity, it just hurt too bad and it didn't taste good. I depended on the PEG tube for all oral intake for about six months....at about six months I began adding little bites of food yet I still had the PEG tube in for well over a year. SCC first time 1989, with a diagnoses of 'cancer in situ' removed lesion, no other treatments.
SCC recurrence 1997 of tongue and floor of the mouth. Stage III /IV Hemmiglossectomy (removed over 60% of tongue/ floor of the mouth), free flap, modified neck, RAD and Chemo(cisplatin, 5fu) simutainously.
Cancer free 6, yes, six, years!
