I had the surgery in 2001 and can both eat and talk just fine with the normal food restrictions due to dry mouth. Actually, the surgery allowed me to eat many foods I couldn't eat before because I no longer could asperate food. I have a TEP which allows me to speak. If that wouldn't work, then he could use an electro-larynx. If you want to talk, I'd be glad to give you my number, however, I am on vacation until the 12th of August.
