You need to be treated at a cancer center, treatment should include surgery and likely radiation and chemotherapy. Pick a good hospital and good drs. They should also scan you to see if it has spread to your neck (lymphnodes) jaw and other parts. Best of luck

Sorry for your diagnosis. If it was confirmed by biopsy to be cancerous, it is, and the only way to confirm it. Most Head and Neck cancer are Squamous Cell Carcinoma, but there are other less common forms. I second what Cheryld recommended to have further testing, and hopefully is it's not extensive. Good luck with everything.

Welcome to OCF! So sorry you have gotten diagnosed with oral cancer in your gums. If you are using tobacco or betel nuts please stop immediately as you do not want to further irritate your mouth.

As Cheryl stated, treatment can include surgery or radiation with or without chemo. You may even be treated with only radiation with or without chemo. Best thing to do is to find a large facility where they treat many oral cancer patients so have the most experience with successful outcomes. A second opinion at another large cancer center is also a good plan. You need to look for places where they use a team based approach.

At this time, try to eat as much as possible and dont worry about gaining weight. You probably will lose some during whatever treatment you have. Your sense of eating and swallowing may also be compromised for a few weeks or months from treatments.

Line up friends and relatives to help you during your treatment. Anyone who offers to help you, tell them when the time comes you will let them know what they can do. Make sure to write down their contact info so you or someone else can call them when the time comes.

Get a full blood count including thyroid. Many of us who have gone thru radiation have thyroid issues down the road. A full blood test now will ensure you have a baseline for all the counts in case you have issues down the road.

Go see a dentist and get any questionable teeth pulled. You may need a flouride tray if getting radiation treatments. Just get the ball rolling by getting a good dental check up now.

Feel free to ask questions and we will help you as much as possible with info and support. Good luck!!!

I see your are in India so I will assume you are currently receiving care and plan to continue to receive care in country. You need to seek out the best care you can obtain. As I have not a clue what the standard level of care is in India, how widespread good care is accessible and affordable, you will need to do that research on your end.

What makes sense to be here on this board is to get a complete understanding of the standard level of care for specific oral cancers. If you can provide the specific diagnosis like many have attached to their signature then we can help a lot more.

Some, maybe many of the things we discuss here are common while they may be unusual or even non-existent in your area or country or affordable and accessible. So be cautious about expecting all we discuss here as it is likely different in your country but you can surely use what is mentioned here to post questions to your health providers to probe and gain some sense of how the two systems compare with respect to cancer diagnosis and treatment.

good luck, don

I believe there are quite a few posters from India on this forum. It might be helpful for you to read their posts or even pm them to find out what their experiences have been. Having said that, I am not sure how you can do this search.

Sorry you have to come on this journey, nevertheless, welcome and good luck.

Hi Vikas, kindly share the biopsy details. You have not mentioned where in India. Assuming you are in Delhi, you can go for RGCI or Dharmshila Cancer Hospital which are good for comprehensive cancer care.

My Biopsy report is :

Microscopy & Impression:

Gingival mucosa biopsy:

stratified squamous epithelium overlying
fibrocollagenous tissue.
2) No dysplasia or malignancy seen

My doctor is saying i have to take 6 months medicine and all the things will be in control

Pls help me exactly what it means actually my family is not clearing all things with me
Posted By: Eshwar N Re: Hi i have white patches on my gums - 02-25-2013 06:13 PM
Hi Vikas, from the second point it seems pretty much clear that you do not have pre-cancer or cancer.

However, you do have a some sort of gum condition that is causing these patches. Hope that if you smoke or chew tobacco, you would have already quit. These patches are usually benign but do require treatment as it is response to some irritation.

Kindly share your details and do let us know about the treatment plan.

Dear Eshwar, thnx for your consideration the main problem is that i am not able to quit smoking and drinking completely, even after my biopsy although i have minimise it.My dentist says its a stage moving to cancer if you dn't quit smoking ang and drinking completely.
She adviced me 6 months course of medicine and after every 15 days i have to go for routine check up.She adviced me to take ZEVIT,Lycogreen and a cup of green tea daily.
According to her these white patches can take a form of cancer also, she said these white patches cannot be removed through medicines and i have to go for surgery after 6 months.
Eshwar i want to know wheather smoking and drinking will affect on this or not and these medicines are sufficient for this treatment or not.
Actually my dentist is in my blood relation thats why all the thing are not very much clear to me.
I am in a great tension these days pls help in all this
I live in North delhi and what about you

Thanks for your support
Posted By: Eshwar N Re: Hi i have white patches on my gums - 02-26-2013 05:36 AM
Hi Vikas, I live in East Delhi and my father was having treatment at RGCI. You have to quit smoking and drinking completely as your doctor is right. Your doctor has only prescribed Anti-oxidants for now.

The biopsy says that the white patches are not malignant but if the irritation persists, there is a possibility that they may turn malignant.

At this point of time, you are standing on the edge. Cancer is a terrible disease so quit smoking and drinking when you still have time.

Hi Eshwar,if i quit smoking and drinking from right now then it means i am on a safer side(pls clear)these days i am feeling that there is a little swelling on my face also.As advised by you and my doctor i quit from both by this point.
i will update on the same as i got any new information.
I had biopsy on 7/2/13 kindly confirm whether during these days when i was taking both the things after biopsy the things will not get worst or there are any chances of getting caught by cancer
Posted By: Eshwar N Re: Hi i have white patches on my gums - 02-26-2013 04:25 PM
Relax and be positive. You had a close shave and good that you have quit both. Take medicines and healthy diet as suggested by doctor. Cancer does not happen overnight, it is usually preceded by pre-malignancy stage.

Swelling may be due to some allergy, kindly consult doctor. Nothing to worry too much about.
Posted By: ChristineB Re: Hi i have white patches on my gums - 02-26-2013 05:20 PM
Thanks Eshwar!!!!

Vikas, please avoid tobacco at all costs. Using tobacco is a choice and it will eventually have a major impact on your health. You do not want to go thru oral cancer all due to an unhealthy habit.

Best wishes!

Hi i was reading about leukoplakia.same symptoms are with me instatly irritation starts in my mouth after smoking and after some times my mouth swells and when i quit smoking it gets normal. But there are some doubts:can leukoplakia(white patches) occurs on gums also and what are the chances of becoming it in cancer. Can you help
Posted By: Brian Hill Re: Hi i have white patches on my gums - 03-10-2013 03:56 PM
leukoplakia is a pre cancerous condition. Your body is telling you something by producing it, and you should listen. Eventually it progresses to dysplasia, and then on to malignancy. Continuing the use of tobacco will bring multiply bad things to your life. Oral cancer is just one of them. Heart disease and other cancers are all associated with tobacco use. Of course it is highly addictive, so besides understanding what is happening to you biologically, you have to find a way to break the addiction. Reading the stories of people here who have been lost to cancer, the families they leave behind, the pain they endure, and even in those that survive who go on to live with difficulties. this should be enough to motivate you to change this habit. Vikas this forum is for people who are in the fight. You have a chance to avoid all this. Please find an online support forum to help you quit smoking

Well said, Brian.
Posted By: Teacher Karen Re: Hi i have white patches on my gums - 03-10-2013 06:26 PM
Although I am a non-smoker (never smoked), my oral cancer began with leukoplakia. I had just one small white spot on my upper gum which my dentist diligently followed for 9 years before it actually progressed to dysplasia and then diagnosed as a squamous cell carcinoma. Vikas, please start with your dentist and he/she can do an oral cancer screening with a brush biopsy which is not invasive. Even if it if that comes back negative, they can follow you closely and order a biopsy if that should ever be necessary.
Posted By: Eshwar N Re: Hi i have white patches on my gums - 03-11-2013 04:54 AM
Vikas, Self-control is the best way to get rid of any addiction, however, sometimes you need help to learn to self-control. Vipassana will only help you become better!

As mentioned over the phone and also suggested by Brian, you go through the forum to understand how we all are fighting this dreaded disease. If that also does not help, I am ready to take you to RGCI so that you can see the suffering.

Leukoplakia is a early signal that you have got, a warning! QUIT SMOKING AND DRINKING.
