Joined: Sep 2014 Posts: 27 | Congrats on the good news on the PET, we are 8 days to go with the rads and last Cisplatin tomorrow. Our tumor has melted down substantially. Our doc lets me view it through the scope. My best wishes for you and your hubby! I hope we get good news too.

Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,606 Likes: 2 | Carol, my potassium was low for 10 years. My calcium was borderline high for the same amount of time. This turned out to be the worst thing and caused more problems long term than everything I experinced. I got one of those potassium pilks stuck in my throat a couple of years ago and it burned a hole,mother are so powerful. If calcium hovers above 10, or near the top of the normal range, stay on the doctors. While it is "normal", it can't stay there for years like mine.
Maybe finding food sources for potassium would help get eating back on track. Even salmon is rich in potassium, as are sweet potatoes, eggplant, tomato juice, avocados,means, green leafy vegetables, mushrooms, bananas, to name a few. I sneak in white sweet potatoes as a substitute for potatoes in a lot of dishes. It gives a somewhat sweet slant to things and most people don't notice it's even a sweet potato. It's good for some extra beta carotene, too.
Potassium is depleted during cellular destruction and calcium is a product of that destruction.
Make sure the vegetables are washed well while WBC are low. Also, avoid yard work and being around others without a mask if possible.

Frequent hand washing, use hand sanitizer, handling money, avoiding going out in public (even the grocery store), getting the flu shot and pneumonia shots are also good ideas (check with your doc about shots).
