So Ok, now that I've successfully grilled and eaten a steak I guess there will be no more news worth posting as far as eating progress goes. There are still some things that taste nasty or are too dry to eat but, I can eat steak! The awful metallic taste that meat had for so long is gone. From here on it's all..well, um..GRAVY. lol.


David R. 65 yr old male non-smoker, light drinker, stage 3 or 4, depending on which doc you ask, scc rt. tonsil, 2 nodes, 7 weeks radiation and chemo. No surgery. Teatment ended 3/20/08. PET scan 8/08 showed no cancer.
And now, as of oct, 2010, caregiver to wife, Linda, with breast cancer.
May, 2013, Linda diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Enuf already.

Eating white meat chicken was the hardest thing for me as most steaks I like are marbled with plenty of juicy fat like a Delmonico and I like them rare to medium rare which also helps in the saliva dept.

Yeah, tried some chicken tenders last night, not so good but better than the last time I tried chicken when it tasted like garbage.

David, congrats on eating steak!!!! Thats a huge accomplishment. I bet you sure gfelt good when you were able to eat that. Keep up the good work.

Until about 4 weeks ago I hadn't had a solid meal in about 18 months. Last time I had a steak was summer 2007. I don't eat red meat often (even before tx) so it's a real treat when I do.

Congratulations!!...I haven't explored the steak issue in a while. Chicken and pork is hard for me too...Too dry.

Congradulations David!!! I understand that steak is a biggie!

My hubby can eat tenderloin med rare, but not all red meats; they are too textured and not moist enough. He never liked "boiled" meats like pot roast, but chicken thighs are his favorite and fresh fish (even fried) if I don't dry it out. Early on, gravy was his best friend along with milk. He is still trying to get spice into his meals (he was a hot food/hot pepper fanatic before dx), but anything with pepper in it stings. He also, hates white meat chicken, no matter how it's cooked, and loves pork if it's "just done"...tenderloins are the best, with gravy on it.

He can even eat barbequed chicken if I tone down the sauce with more ketsup and he enjoys it.

He told me the secret is in the cooking. If I cook "it out", food becomes too dry. And I don't mean undercooked...I mean watched until it is the right temperature, with a meat thermometer.

Rare or medium rare lamb chops with mint jelly work also as does prime rib au jus.
