I had my PEG removed Wednesay - the GI gave me no anesthesia ust told me to lie back (I was in a regualr examining room in his office) and he just yanked on it and pulled it out - much to my suprise and chagrin!

He did not stich the resultant hole and there is a still an opening from which a light pink tissue is extruding -

Is this normal treatment or is my doctor a lunatic?

Pretty standard procedure. Hole will heal up on its own and scab like protrusion will fall off in a couple of weeks. Surprised he didn't at least tell you what to expect and "get ready" before the big yank. Good news is you're rid of the PEG which means you're getting enough calories down on your own. Healing in general will be slow but you're headed in the right direction.

Bill . . . SCC - originated in right tonsil, drifted into neck ( 28 lymph nodes removed - one positive ). Radical neck dissection in September 07, completed 34 radiation tx on January 4, 2008. Used Peg. Non smoker, 61, good shape, no previous health issues. Second year PET scan - "all clear".

Whoa, Vixmommy... not even anything topical? Youch! No stitches is pretty standard, but I'm surprised you got no anesthesia.

It should close up pretty quickly though. I kept mine covered for a couple of days since there was some 'discharge' but it healed within a week I think.

Did you get any after care instructions?

I had exactly the same removal procedure when they took out my first PEG. Healed up faster than my trach stoma did.

PEG tubes are normally removed just by yanking them out. Thats how mine was removed too. It hurt like heck only abotu 5 minutes then it was a huge relief!

It sounds barberic in this day and age, but that is what they do.
Yank! Mine just hurt a couple of hours after for a little while.
Good Luck and happy eating!
