Hello all. I was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the right lateral tongue three years ago. I had a right partial glossectomy, a saliendectomy and a modified right neck dissection. All margins were clean. This December I noticed a lump again and had a excisional biopsy on 12/31/08. The cancer is back. I had my fourth of 25 intensity modulated radiation treatments (IMRT) and my first of 3 cisplatin treatments. The plan is to follow that course and then have a temporary seed implant to finish everything off. The doctors are hopeful and I feel like a deer starring into headlights. Also, the tumor is larger and deeper this time, already 2.5 or so cm and at the base of the oral tongue. I wish all of you peace and well being. Sincerely, Jay Lenhart/Pittsburgh, PA

Hi Jay. Sorry to hear "it's back". My husband had surgery march 08 and another growth now in his jaw in less than a year. Our next treatment is going to be the cyberknife within the next few weeks. I wish you well. Let us know how you are. We are from New Castle Pa. Who did your surgery in Pgh ? Dr. Ferris ? Thoughts are with you. Claudia

Hi Jay - so sorry to hear that your cancer has returned. As you can see from my name, I too am from Pgh. Are you being treated at Hillman?

Are you, were you a tobacco user?

Have they tested you for HPV?

What's your age?

Did they consider smaller weekly doses of Cisplatin which seems to lessen the potentially severe side effects that usually come after Txs 2 and 3?

Hi Jay and welcome to the board. There are many of us who have been through this twice, so if you have questions perhaps we can be of assistance. In the meantime, you sound very "together" and on track. Let us know how you are making out.
