Completed IMRT (35) sessions 9 weeks ago, along with weekly chemo. Recently caught a cold which caused my throat to get quite sore and difficult to swallow. Last night I looked at my tongue and found it was split about 3/8 of an inch (width and depth)most of the way back toward the rear od my mouth. Any ever have this experience? Night call to on-call doctor (MO) said he suspects damage from treatmentsm but recommends seeing ENT. Thoughts or experiences?

Also have turkey neck of softball size - having just arrived this last week.

Thanks

Jim,

I've often joked about my tongue feeling like it might break from the dryness of it, but yours is no joking matter. I believe I would seek treatment ASAP. You didn't mention bleeding, so I'm assuming it's not. Have you spoken with your RO? You had no surgery, but I think I would feel better if the ENT I saw was as a referral from one of the oncology Docs and experienced with oncology patients himself.

Hi Jimbo,
I am in WA as well and used to have a neighbor we called Jimbo ... I so hope this is not you .,.. as I would not want to have a cancer diagnosis in common with an old neighbor but if you lived in Bellingham prior, lemme know!

Anyways ... have no inside scoop info on your situation but I can only imagine how troubling this would be... I am so sorry you are facing this after successfully coming thru treatments. I will hold you up in my prayers and keep you in my thoughts., Please keep us posted as we truly do care.

Are you being treated at the UW? I live up by Marysville but go to UW for my care. Will probably use Mt Vernon for my ongoing "observation mode" care however, so I am not in traffic for hours all of the time... every trip down there takes a full day and Mt Vernon is tied in with them now, thru the cancer care alliance so I am pretty sure it is good quality care and they get advice from UW ongoing, so I am asking if this is a plausible idea for me, and hoping that it is. I also plan to move to AZ before too much longer and in Jan the Cancer Care Center opens a new facility in Goodyear right by Phoenix, so I will be all set there too.

anyways I am rambling bout things that have no connection to a tongue splitting so I willo hush but i don't see many on here from WA, so it is like you are a neighbor even if you are not my true old neighbor, Jimbo! smile ,...

I wish you the very best and am praying there is an easy explanation and resolution to your current situation. God bless.

Don't think I'm the old neighbor. Have not lived in B'ham before. I am getting my ENT and potential surgery care at the UW, but radiation and chemo were at Swedish. First ENT retired ao I looked up a good one at the UW. Thanks

Jimbo,

I'm glad you're going to an ENT at the UW. In your position and location that's where I would want to go. Let us know what happens.
