I agree with Markus. Doctors like everyone else prefer to do what they are used to. The big problem with cisplatin is the side effects. If you can get 7 smaller ones rather than 3 Standard, go with the 7! If you can go with Erbitux go with it! Anyhow in my case, it could said that the cisplatin didn't really work. All this said, It's just my humble opinion! Best of Luck! You'll get through this! Tom Roussell

I had the 3 big doses of cisplatin. My doc cancelled the 3rd dose so I only had 2 doses. After the first one I was ok til the end of week 2 then I was pretty sick. The second dose was cut down and about a week after the second dose I felt pretty bad. My blood counts dropped and I was so week that I needed a wheelchair. Smaller more frequent doses are easier to tolerate.

Watch out for a big side effect, hearing loss. Get your hearing checked before you start it and pay close attention to your hearing. Thats one side effect that I didnt get.

With the weekly treatment, I did not get the impression that the chemo caused major problems, although it is difficult to separate its effects from those of the radiation. At least I could not time anything specific to the chemo days.. As Christine says watch out for the ringing, it may happen quickly even if given lower doses. I definitely had it already after the first infusion then it went away and got worse after the second time. Then we switched to carboplatin which is not (as) ototoxic.

Partial glossectomy (25%) anterior tongue. 4/6/07/. IMRT start @5/24/07 (3x) Erbitux start/end@ 5/24/07. IMRT wider field (30x) start 6/5/07. Weekly cisplatin (2x30mg/m2), then weekly carbo- (5x180mg/m2). End of Tx 19 July 07.
