I posted in the intro forum about my dad's cancer last week and am switching here now. I hope those who supported me with their kind words on that forum will read this too... My dad is in India and has cancer on his inner cheek. It is stage 1. My sister is with him and after two opinions, he has decided to do a modified neck dissection and tongue grafting(?) in India. He will go for surgery tomorrow..the dr. predicts a 4 week recovery after which radiation maybe performed. Although I can't do much from so far away, what do we need to know about after care? Can anyone help with experiences, pain management? Thanks..

Dad had scc inner cheek, mod rad diss, 24 rad, 2 chemos, 2 blood and platelet transfusions...praying that CT scan comes clear..

I am just a little over 5 months post treatment and into the 2nd weeks of rads & chemo. I have a reoccurence and am being ready for tongue implants the 29th. I just can't seem to come up with the correct amswer to your questions. I know you will receive some great advice from others on here. I know he will need pain meds , care and prayer. I wish you well and have him in my prayers.

Thanks EzJim,

I am praying for you and hope you will fight this completely. My dad completed the surgery a few hours ago and seems to be responding a bit. we will watch and wait for now...the tests of tissues around his nose and lymph nodes show the cancer has not spread there. The tests of the other areas are not complete yet. Thank you for your prayers.

Thanks Christine,

My dad is gaining strength slowly and day two after surgery, he has started walking. He wants to leave the hospital(he's super restless) but we think he should stay til Monday at least. He can't talk still so he writes.

I am so happy with his progress. For being 70+ years old, he's doing great! I constantly feel a burden of guilt for not being there with him. He did not want me to come since I have a 3 and 1 year old. I hope I can get over the guilt.

I'm sure your dad understands why you can't be there and doesn't want you to forget about the kids. We guys past 70 are tough and pliable. LOL 3 days out I mowed my yard and ran the weedeater. Dr said to wait at least 4 weeks. I was almost close. I think our families worry about our care more than we do. I hope everything works out for the best for all of you.

Hi Kavita,

Sorry to hear about what is going on. Ensure you get the best possible opinion, and try to get it from one of the top cancer centers in India.

I know a few people who have recieved treatment in India and the opinions vary on how to treat various cancers.

If you PM I can get you some further contacts at a few places I contacted.

Best of luck,

H
