Long story short, my husband had tonsil cancer in 2001. Today my daughter had to pick a cancer to research in science. She chose Oral Cancer since she knows so much about it. Well the kids were horrible to her. "Your dad got cancer from sex" and on and on and on.
I told her first of all, yes you can get it that way but his tests were negative, but she should not have to explain that to a class of 10th graders. She feels like she is having to defend her dad from getting cancer. I am waiting for her to tell me she doesn't want to go to school tomorrow etc etc.

Sorry just had to vent.

Thanks for listening.

That just made me laugh. That thought ought to keep the little bastards from having sex for a while.

On the serious side, did she stress the fact that smoking and drinking are major causes of this disease also. If so, she did good. So now no cigarrettes, no beer and no sex. I'd say good work. And no she should not have to defend her Dad. Talk to the teacher.

Take care,
Eileen

Sherrie, I'm really sorry your daughter had to go through that, but I kind of had the same reaction as Eileen. They probably were partly so horrible because it scared them - especially that it can be gotten from oral sex as well as drinking and smoking.

Now that I have calmed down, the no sex part was the first thing that crossed my mind. Kelly didn't present her project yet, she had to announce which cancer she was going to research. She will state all the facts when the time comes. She was just so appalled that someone would say something like that about her Dad.

"Now if we can just get the to obey and clean their rooms!"

LOL Now that is funny!!!!

Ah the poor kid! At that age she probably wants to crawl under a rock! But I'll bet she pulls it off with a well researched and well prepared project. Fear is a great motivator, one that will stick with them. Kudo's to her!

My blood is boiling!
Part of me thinks it's great they realise that not everyone who gets cancer smokes and drinks--it can strike anyone, at any time and that's why there' as yet no cure and a need for research.
But yup--only 2 ways to go here--she makes that presentation stunning and she finds a sympathetic scieince teacher yo puy those gobby kids straight!
Someone should tell them that more evil is done in this world through evil tongues than anything else!!

Kids THINK they KNOW everything !!! ( teens do anyhow LOL ) ..and while I am sorry your daughter had to hear those things ..I hope they take a HARD look at the facts and give up some of the things that can cause this horrible disease!! However I doubt it ,,I worked for Planned Parenthood for 2 1/2 years and They all think it won't happen to them !!!
Tell your daughter to bring lots of photos ...maybe that will hit home !!

Shar

PS ..If any one can solve the clean your room thing and the Not sas back ...can ya let me know ??? hahahaha

Sherrie - How wonderful that your daughter chose Oral Cancer as a research project. Kids can be so cruel, but hopefully when the talk is given, the teacher can keep control of the class and squash anyone who starts to snicker or detracts from the seriousness of the subject. Pictures are a great idea Sharlee -Outdoor Texan who posted here sometime ago had great pictures. He gave talks to kids on his experience with cancer. He's still at:
