Hello Everyone, and please forgive me for not getting information to you sooner on Tom's surgery. Things have been a little crazy around here.

On Dec 24, Tom had a right upper lobectomy, in which about 50% of his right lung was removed. Path reports show what appears to be localized tumor 1.5 cm, but more examination is underway to determine if this is a new primary or metastasis. Of course we are hoping for the former, as that may mean no further treatment is necessary, and we should know more about that early next week.

There were some complications post-surgery requiring him to be in the ICU where he remains. Our happy news today is that Tom is off the ventilator and breathing well on his own. A few more benchmarks to meet and he will be moved to the surgical recovery unit. He is a fighter and has put up with so much already, but has never lost his determination to persevere, or his sense of humor.

We so appreciate all of the caring and support from you guys. It means so much. I will keep you posted.

Warm regards,
Charlotte and Tom

As a fellow-lung-tumour patient, I have corresponded with Tom and wondered how he got on.
Thank you so much for the update and I hope his recovery from now on is problem free and you get the best possible news about the status of the tumour.
My thoughts and hopes are with him,

Hello Everyone,
I am happy to report that Tom is is off the ventilator and out of the ICU. He's breathing well on his own, is up and walking around, and we hope to have him home soon. He is healing nicely. We are awaiting the final pathology to learn whether the cancer was metastatic or a new primary. We do hope that he doesn't need further treatment.

Thanks for all you kind words and good wishes. I'm sure you'll be hearing from Tom soon!
Warm regards,
Charlotte

I second what Helen says. Even if its nothing but a couple of hours - take some time for you before Tom comes home. Read a book, take a nap. I took the time to do absolutely nothing. I sat here in total silence of my living room and just enjoyed not hearing all the hospital equipment and heart monitors. That silence was the most beautiful sound.

I'm glad to hear that Tom is doing better smile
