I am 4mos. post treatment. I tolerated chemo and radiation extremely well, but one thing is concerning me. On the left side where I recieved more radiation I experienced swelling at the lower back of my jaw about 5 weeks into treatment. My RO wasn't concerned at the time. I last saw him early July. I am healing fairly well except this swelling has not improved and has deepened into an ache. Does anyone know if this should be cause for concern?

Left tonsil SCC, HPV+. T2N0M0. Tonsillectomy 3-07, bilateral radiation, cisplatin 3x, Tx completed 6-06. Clear PET 4-01-2008.
Thyroidectomy 5-9-08, resulting in permanent surgically-induced hypoparathyroidism and adrenal problems. Bummer.

No expert here but could be swelling from the radiated tissue. Could be causing some pressure to a sensitive area. Might explain why now it is an ache.

Radiation is the gift that keeps on giving.
Like that wonderful zap.
We have been told that 2 years out things may still be changing.

Call your DR.
That's why they get the big bucks.

Will check back on you.

Could this be neck or jaw lymphedema? Is there such a thing? It's just worrying to me; makes me think something got missed.

You certainly could have lymphedema, however it seems to me that you should be making an appointment with your doctor. Considering that this has been there for sometime and it is causing some aching, make the call.

I also eperienced jaw pain and swelling in the 5th month after tx. I am now going into my 10th month and still have swelling and some pain.. I asked my RO about it, in fact today, and he said it was a reaction to the radiation and would go away at some point. Hang in there.

As a caregiver every little thing he mentions worries me. That's my job and I am very good at it.

Glad you are going to see the pros.
