Does removal of the peg tube hurt and does it take a long time for the area to heal up? Minnie

hi,

my peg removal was simple.

the nurse put on gloves.

nurse checked to see if ballon was still inflated (mine was not, if it had been, nurse would have deflated it)

nurse pulled peg out.

no stitches. maybe a steril wipe and a gause was applied.

i walked out without having felt no pain, nor seen any bleeding.

that night i was at a cancer presentation and i sat next to my speech person... i had beans for dinner... passed gas thru the peg hole... now that was good for a laugh! even today.

all healed nicely.

so have fun and graduate with a smile, go get some beans.

cheers,
larryb

Minnea, my experience with PEG removal was a little different. The one good yank was the same, but it hurt like the devil for about 1/10 of a second. I hollered, then it was all over. I needed to keep it bandaged for a week or so. There may be no discomfort, but if there is, it is over very quickly.

I am still trying to pick myself up off the floor after reading larry-b's post. I haven't laughed that much in a long time. I had my peg tube removed in Oct.It looked like a minature plunger on the end (about the size of a quarter). They just pulled it out, the nurse told me it would hurt and held my hand.It was like giving birth very quickly,Was very glad to see it come out!!All in all it wasn't that bad,I was a little sad to see it go, after all it was my lifeline for a year. PS. I won't eat beans for awhile!! Gwen

minnie,
my husband just had his tube taken out yesterday. (believe me, he is the biggest baby!!) the doctor told him it was going to hurt so to brace himself on the count of three. he said it felt like someone punched him in the stomach. the pain was over in a few seconds. they put a bandaid on the opening and he left. after all that he's been through that was a piece of cake!! i can't believe the experience of larry. hope you have a similar one.

Thanks to all for the information...........especially Larry! It's amazing how "gas humor" still makes me laugh, and laugh hard! My mother never found the humor in it all, but me and my two brothers surely did. I have shared many a "gas" laugh with my daughters.......thank you for this one Larry, my kids will think it's hysterical.

It's so strange that this topic came up.

My husband had the tube, but refused to use it once. The doctors realized that he was adamant about having it removed, and did so the day of his last rad treatment.

I called the doctor, set it up, and since the doctor was not busy, suggested that Dennis come in in 45 minutes. Dennis showed up, and here comes the doctor with an intern.

The doc grabbed the tube, told Dennis that it would hurt for a minute and snatched it! Then he looked at the intern and asked if she could do that!

Needless to say, Dennis was not pleased to have this novice in the room!

But, like you've said, the pain only lasted a few seconds. He came home with a band-aid and nobody can tease him about having two belly-buttons anymore.

Love,
Mandi

As with other experiences expressed here, removal of my husband's PEG tube took all of about 5 minutes...and the doctor charged us around $600!
