Buzz was in surgery for 3-1/2 hours (!) as 32 inches of his intestines were placed back inside his body. I really was too exhausted, worried and stunned to ask any questions when the doctor finally came out to speak with me.
It was my understanding that the surgery would be over relatively quickly, and I could get no one to tell me anything, except that the surgery was 'going well', but 'a little more involved than anticipated'. He was in the recovery room for 1-1/2 hours following surgery, and I was not allowed to visit him there, so by the time he was put into a room I was nearly hysterical! The doctor did say that Buzz will need to take it easy for several weeks.
He did not have general anesthesia, rather they used an 'epidural', which will remain in his back until sometime tomorrow; and has a cath and is getting IV fluids. I've spoken to him by phone 3 times since I got home, and he says he's doing fine.
I plan to ask the surgeon for his advice regarding the shoulder.
I have come come for the night to take care of our 'boys' (our Bostons, Jack & Buster) and will return to the hospital in the morning. When I asked the attending nurse if Buzz would come home tomorrow...standard reply....'we'll see'...
God bless you all!
Lois

The IV's are out, the epidural is out, but he still has the draining tube at the surgical site; dr. says he will come home with that.
He has approx. 30 staples, and looks like he's lost about 10 lbs. this week, even though his appetite is perfect and he's eaten everything they'll give him.
He's actually walking 'upright', which he hasn't done since coming home from Winston. He was a delightful sight to see walking this morning!
I'm going to be at the hospital before 8 am, so that I can speak to the doctor about Buzz' shoulder. I've been thinking that the radiation and chemo might have possibly weakened his bones, and I don't want just anyone pulling on him. Will ask surgeon if he thinks we need to see an Orthopaedist.
Buzz was depressed and a little tearful today; he was also somewhat confused and made some questionable statments; I'm assuming that this is related to the drugs he has been given.
Thanks for your continued prayers! We love each and every one of you and are SO very thankful for your precious gift of friendship!
