Barry had a scare after his tonsillectomy (which preceded his chemoradiation) -- he started to bleed like crazy, bright red blood too! Needless to say we panicked! -- the tissue is very vascular and bleeds easily. He had to go in two times in two days for the area to be cauterized, the only way they could stop it bleeding. And of course it hurt like h----.
He did a lot of salt/soda rinses (warm water) to reduce the swelling and promote healing. He was given Percoset and believe me, he took it!
Since you have thrush, be sure you are getting sufficient meds for that as it can slow healing -- many folks have to have a dual treatment of oral Diflucan and topical Nystatin rinse.
Hang in there!

My husband suffered with many bouts of thrush following his tonsillectomy and during radiation, and it was always fairly quickly relieved with Diflucan, 200 mg, two pills the first day, then one pill a day for 5 days (or 10 days when he was in really bad shape).
Hope you get some relief soon!
