I got rid of my persistant thrush by using grapefruit seed extract in water as a rinse/gargle. Okayed by doctor first, of course.

Left tonsil SCC, HPV+. T2N0M0. Tonsillectomy 3-07, bilateral radiation, cisplatin 3x, Tx completed 6-06. Clear PET 4-01-2008.
Thyroidectomy 5-9-08, resulting in permanent surgically-induced hypoparathyroidism and adrenal problems. Bummer.

Rx Diflucan was the only 'cure' for Buzz, along with Nystatin.

Mouth fungus not a lotta fun.
I use a combination of nystatin suspension, swish with 5 ml for one minute and swallow TID for 7 days and diflucan 150 mg tablets once a day for ten days in my patients. This seems to put the run to thrush or "candida".
Grapefruit and grapefruit seed are great as long as they don't interfere with other meds. Grapefruit in all forms is famous for affecting the desired clinical results of many meds.

You can also reduce the fungus and help your meds by usig a tongue scraper to remove the whitish patches on your cheeks, and tongue. Do not try and scrape any white patches in your throat. Be gentle but thorough. After each pass with the tongue scraper rinse it off in running water and the swish it in a salt water solution.
During thrush outbreaks stay away from alcohol and alcohol containing mouth rinses. Use one that does not contain alcohol. Alcohol dries out the tissues and help support fungal growth.

I hope this is helpful to some.
Smoking also helps support fungal growth.

Lolita: just quit already...It'll do you a world of good.

Cheers,

Mike

The thrush creature (much nicer name than fungus) is yeast and it thrives on starch and sugar. Limit your eating of sweets and starches and rinse and brush after EVERY meal or treat. Beyond that Nystatin worked well for me.

Mark, 21 Year survivor, SCC right tonsil, 3 nodes positive, one with extra-capsular spread. I never asked what stage (would have scared me anyway) Right side tonsillectomy, radical neck dissection right side, maximum radiation to both sides, no chemo, no PEG, age 40 when diagnosed.

When I had thrush a few months ago they gave me these Clitromazole troches to suck on every 5-6 hours or so. I had to take about 60 of them. It did the job. Diflucan works better but its hard on the liver and I have hep C. I could never stand the taste or after taste of Nystatin so I was very happy to pour it down the sink. Besides Diflucan is much more effective. I wouldn't mess around with home remedies - thrush can be fatal if it goes systemic.

Gary, you have a great point. Diflucan depends on your liver. So if you have or may have liver problems/disfunction diflucan is not for you.

Cheers,

mike
