Dad's surgery on Wednesday removed a .9 cm tumor from right side of tongue and he had modified right neck dissection with 18 nodes removed--all negative. He came home Sunday. His swelling is reduced each day, he's eating soft foods now, but complains of pulling at site of staples, numbness of right ear and soreness in the right shoulder (high up, in front, near collarbone) and, of course, difficulty swallowing. He has lots of phlegm and coughing and doesn't sleep well because he is anxious he will choke. He wouldn't use the morphine button post-op (feared he'd die in his drug-induced sleep), so they finally gave him liquid Tylenol plus codeine instead and he's continuing that at home. I got a humidifier for his bedroom to keep moisture at 40-50% and have elevated top of his bed. Any other ideas or tips from those of you who've done this? He's due to have radiation to the tongue, too, to begin in 3 or 4 weeks. He's very anxious (that was true before tongue cancer, too!) and has been treated for nonHodgkins lymphoma for the past 11 years. He finished most recent round of chemo for that in January and discovered the growth on tongue in March. Any ideas on ways to keep him comfortable and get him to sleep (so he'll heal) would be appreciated. confused
