Well, I went to the ENT yet again, and he set me up for a biopsy on the back left side of my tongue finally! It's scheduled for the 17th, one day before my birthday. He did say that normally for me to have pain I would have a large tumor if it was cancer and he still doesn't see much in there. So thats good so far lol. He could see a little bitof a red spot this time and he will be taking the biopsy from where I need him too so thats good.
Hopefully it's nothing worth worrying about or if is carcinoma hopefully I will catch it early enough to reduce my morbidity!
Wish me luck, and if it turns out benign please forgive me for wasting everyone's time here.

Hi rdb7777,

Good luck with your biopsy -- I hope it turns out to be benign. However, I don't like to hear about doctors generalizing when it comes to the implications of pain. In the months leading up to my diagnosis, a couple of doctors told me that my 24-hour-a-day pain was actually a good sign because that meant it almost certainly wasn't cancer! Also, while I did end up with a diagnosis of SCC, it was not a "large tumor" that caused the pain -- it was Stage II and it was treatable. I'm not trying to lead you to any conclusions here -- I just don't like to hear what sounds like a doctor jumping to a conclusion before getting the biopsy results.

I'm hoping in your case the news turns out to be good, but if it's not, please be sure to get to a comprehensive cancer center to be seen by a team that deals with these issues day in and day out.

Cathy

What Cathy says is something my doctor also told me. I had a sore on my tongue after radiation that stayed there for almost 5 months. We biopsied it, negative. He told me that if it ever became excruciatingly painful to call him immediately. I told him that I had always been told that if it hurts, then it's most likely not cancer. He said that the majority of the time that holds true, but that no doctor should assume that pain equals benign.
I have a pretty good feeling you do not have cancer but I sure wouldn't say that based on your pain. Let us know!
