I am watching out for my co-workers husband. I'm not real keen anymore with believing everything your doctor has to say. Her husband has had sores on his tongue for a few months, they are painful. He went in to see a ENT specialist today and he was told he has Leukoplakia. They are treating him with some kind of steroid ointment. They told him if it doesn't go away in a few weeks from the creme then they will have to remove it. I am wondering if anyone out there has been diagnosed with Leukoplakia and if yes what the treatment was.

Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 56 | Hi Michelle: I totally understand your being a bit skeptic! My husband had base of tongue cancer and was mis-diagnosed from Feb until Dec 2004. He saw numerous differant docs all of differant specialities and they all missed it! Including a dentist, ENT and neurologist! It would be great if your friend would get a second opinion, and if he isn't satisfied....push back and keep questioning what the docs are saying.....I'm the biggest skeptic of all after what we have been thru. Hopefully, the dx they have given your friend is right and the steroid will clear it up w/o further issues! Good Luck,

Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 218 | Hi Michelle, Leukoplakia literally means 'white patch' and can be caused by a number of factors from smoking to ill-fitting dentures. More generally, it is thought to be the result of some sort of chronic irritation. Sometimes removing the source of irritation will result in the disappearance of leukoplakia, but in some percentage of cases, it can be a precursor to oral cancer. From what I've read, leukoplakia that does not go away with treatment within a few weeks should be followed closely. Typical treatment for removing it can include removal by surgery, burning it off with a laser or freezing it off with a cryoprobe. I don't know what the state of medical care is in Steven's Point but you may want to suggest a second opinion at a larger facility with more experience in treating oral cavity disorders.
