Can someone explain how one would use a water pic for the thick ropey secretions?

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,357 Likes: 5 | Fill the water pic with warm water, lean over the sink, open your mouth and close your eyes. Then you use the water pic everywhere in your mouth and let whatever it drives out head down the drain of the sink. For a second rinse, I often will add some Biotene mouthwash to the warm water. The water pic does not eliminate the secretions, but it does help one to deal with them. And it feels so wonderful to have a clean feeling non-gunky mouth. Caution of course for anyone who has active mouth sores or recently has had surgery or radiation. The water comes out of the water pic with a fair degree of force, which would be too much for sore areas. Good luck.

Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 5,260 Likes: 3 | Yes low setting, lukewarm water if you are sensitive to temperature and depending on your waterpik - I have the deluxe model - there's this little blue spoon like attachment. It's technically a tongue scraper, but its less forceful than the pointy heads which can hurt if your mouth is raw. I used this just to shoot water around and freshen up -

Anyway, I did not like it, even on low, for my teeth sensitivity. I made a mess with it too. It came in a kit, a regular model, and a travel one I was using, which I bought at Costco at a decent price, and returned it, although many like it.

Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 1,291 Likes: 1 | Ditto on the blue spoon tip. This one I used exclusively while rinsing my mouth. I used warm salt/soda water and that was very comforting. Rather than use the lowest setting, I used the most my mouth could take. The idea being the stronger jet is clearing as much coating as possible and working the salt into the ulcers/sores was healthy. Also, followed with magic mouthwash so felt having as cleared tissue as possible was better for the MM too.
Now I am back to using the regular tips for typical oral cleaning.

Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 319 | May I add that simply gargling with warm water and swishing it around does a pretty good job?
It's even better with a little salt and baking soda added. The baking soda works to change the pH which is good for your teeth. I believe, but wouldn't swear, that the salt helps with the dry mouth also.
