Is there a last of physical activities that are okay with a PEG tube? My husband is afraid riding a jet ski or roller coaster might jar the tube and we can't find answers online. Thanks!

You can do anything, within reason, no wrestling lol. You can swim with a peg, except maybe two weeks post surgery. You may want to put a clip on the tube incase the plug pops open, secure the tube to body by Saran Wrap, tape or flexible bandage. I would make sure to clean thoroughly afterwards, maybe apply Bactrim, due to the microorganisms, pollution in salt water, fesh water, and who knows what in pools. Why not call the doctors office to check.

With a feeding tube the GI doc should give you pamphlets about the do's and donts of having a feeding tube. One big dont is with lifting heavy items. My doc advised nothing over 15 pounds for me. Im not very strong anymore so I cant lift more than that anyway. Another big thing is to keep it clean and dry. A gauze pad with a slit cut half way thru the center is called a drain sponge. Keep one of them between your skin and the plastic guide thats on the tube by where it goes into your stomach.

Ive been told be a couple different doctors to avoid swimming. They said the dirty water you are swimming in can seep into your body thru the gap at the peg site. They also said it can irritate the peg site and could cause infections. Maybe it has something to do with which type of tube you have. The Mickey button allows for more freedom. I still swam a couple times with my J/G tube. I even swam with my piccline which was an even bigger no-no. I would wrap myself in the Glad Press and Seal plastic wrap and swim for a few minutes. Ive never ridden on a jetski before so I dont know how strenuous it is and how it affects your abdominal muscles.

Good luck!!!

Thanks! We got no info on do's and don'ts and it's quite frustrating. I wonder if a gastro doc would have info that would help better than what the RO or MO could.

This info from you two is more than we've had in 2 months! He's starting to eat more foods daily! Exciting! smile

Good find, Paul! Thanks for posting this important info. Many members have tubes and with summer coming this is important.

I want to jump in the pool myself. I can swim good, at least used to, but I don't know about getting out. At least the Y, and many public pools, are required to have access lifts for those that need it. I can manage.

I was told I could do pretty much anything within reason and that I'm comfortable with. However, the information I got when my PEG was put in as well as from the docs was no swimming.

I think if you are able to tape the system in place with a good water proof system, a little swimming isn't a bad thing. finding a heavy duty waterproof bandage is the hard thing.
