Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 80 | Over the past week or so I have developed a shingles-type pain across my upper back (below back clavicle and between 'wing bones') but no rash. I am still taking Roxicet for throat pain and that helps relieve the back issue, but once the roxicet wears off the pain returns. It's not an unbearable pain, but definitely there. In the scheme of things I can live with this, but wonder if this is some type of neuropathy or radiation induced issue.
Has anyone else experienced shingles without the tell-tale rash or similiar? I see my SO today, so it's on my list to talk about.

Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 3,267 Likes: 1 | I had shingles after radiation in 2011, which were very painfull, blistered, and took a month to subside. Did you see a doctor to be diagnosed properly, rule out other illness. I guess with some illnesses, one can be asymptomatic. Good luck

Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 805 | I have had shingles 4 times and always have always had a rash. The last 2 times I caught it in the red burning stage and we were able to stop it before it blistered.

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 8,311 | I also had shingles post on my arm and I did have the tell tale spidery rash. WOW that was painful but was quickly stopped by the meds. THEN I was told about the shot.....to late for me however.

Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

I have had shingles multiple times and always had a rash. Are you very active? The pain as you describe sounds like muscle issues that could be a result of inactivity. It is important to address it early so it doesn't get too bad. Have you had shingles? Some people experience postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) for several years as the virus tends to hibernate in the spine. Radiation is very stressful to the body and any virus can be disturbed to the point of outbreak.

Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 80 | Yes, I have had shingles before (4 years ago after a very stressfull illness). I caught that fairly early, took the anti-viral meds and kept it to a minimum. The pain seems similiar this time, new location, but no rash or redness. I am only moderately active, so will work on stretches and mobility in case it is muscular. I will also monitor it for a few days and then see my PCP if it continues.
