They removed a painful neuroma (16 days ago from the tip of my tongue). They had to cut and remove a vertical slice of the tip of the tongue. The wound is healing very well but it is very painful. I can't talk too much or pain considerably increases. I can only eat very soft foods or regular foods after being processed and grounded to convert them to a paste. Pain increases during the day, even bearely talking. It is more like a burning pain.
Has anyone had similar problems?
How long this pain lasted?
What precautions dd you take?

Welcome to The Oral Cancer Foundation's online forum. Tongue surgery can be very painful. I have not noticed another member discuss this type of diagnosis before. The members that normally join OCF are oral cancer patients who are treated with surgery and/or radiation with or without chemo. Im not sure if anyone here will be able to help you with your questions. From what I understand of a neuroma it is a mass of nerves so to me it sounds like you would be in considerable pain from having it removed.

Hope you can recover quickly. Good luck.

Thanks Christine! The pain from the neuroma was a totally different pain from the actual one (it was strong nerve pain). My actual pain it is after surgery pain, after removing a considerable vertical slice of the tip of he tongue.

Ask your doc for some medication that will work for nerve pain, neurontin. I was on it for a few months. Its a medication used to help with seizures.

I was given neurontin prior to starting treatment but neurontin works best before pain sets in. I had three surgeries prior to treatment and I had pain that had "set in" including some pretty severe pain on my tongue from the biopsies.

Then add to that sores on my tongue and mouth from the rads and it turned into a real pain picnic. Now, a couple of weeks out from the end of treatment, I'm still experiencing some major discomfort on my tongue. Oxycodone (liquid) and Magic Mouthwash have been my buddies.

Ask your doctor. Managing pain is a big part of treatment and recovery.
