Joined: Mar 2013 Posts: 37 | So I am just over one month post surgery and noticed a new white spot on my tongue this weekend. It is on the same side as the cancer. Does scar tissue turn white? It looks like it has a small dip or hole in the middle of the white spot. I have my monthly appointment on Tuesday, but trying to calm myself until then. I kept thinking it would go away, it has now been about 5 days. Please tell me some of you have experienced this before.

Dx 3/18/13 - T1N0M0 SCC L.Tongue
Tx 4/4/13 - Partial glossectomy (no rad/no chemo).
8/8/13 - Thyroid FNA - benign nodule
12/20/13 - Tongue Biopsy - Mild hyperkeratotic dysplasia
12/26/13 - Lymph FNA - benign (dx Cervical lymphadenopathy)
3/17/14 - Tongue Biopsy - normal tissue
5/5/14 - Tongue Biopsy - (awaiting results)

Joined: Mar 2013 Posts: 37 | As an FYI it is on a part of my tongue that can no longer touch my teeth, so I know it can't be from rubbing on my teeth.

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,357 Likes: 5 | So many things happen inside your mouth after surgery, radiation, etc. One day you will have a sore, and the next day it will be gone.
After 9 years I have a white spot right where my flap is, and probably over the last nine years this has been there off and on. While white spots need to be monitored, my surgeon didn't seem overly concerned about this particular one.
Yours could be plaque, could be just part of healing process - keep an eye on it and if it doesn't clear up in 2 weeks call your doctor and get it looked at.
Try not to worry - don't let Cancer steal any more time that it already has.

I believe most surgeons are very empathetic and KNOW how worried we get.
