Had my first solid food in three weeks. Had a bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup with crackers on Wed evening, had a bowl of beef veg soup with crackers and a container of choc pudding today. It was the best tasting food I can remember. Actually put on two pounds in two days. Still inputting 8 cans of insure per day. The radaition won't start for three more weeks at least. Total of 6 weeks after surgery. Is this normal? Seems like a long time to wait. Doc says he wants the pech flap to heal before the rad starts. Dan

Yes 6 weeks is normal because you want the surgical work good and healed before the radiation starts.
Mark, 21 Year survivor, SCC right tonsil, 3 nodes positive, one with extra-capsular spread. I never asked what stage (would have scared me anyway) Right side tonsillectomy, radical neck dissection right side, maximum radiation to both sides, no chemo, no PEG, age 40 when diagnosed.

In my case the tongue cancer had been causing so much problems pre-surgery that after the surgery had healed I was pigging out, all the foods I couldn't eat before the surgery tasted great, no pain, etc.
The 6 weeks before starting radiation would be about right, considering the surgery you had. I think it was 4 to 5 weeks from surgery to start of radiation the first time around for me also. Bob S.
SCC Tongue, stage IV diagnosed Sept, 2002, 1st radical neck dissection left side in Sept, followed by RAD/Chemo. Discovered spread to right side nodes March 2003, second radical neck dissection April, followed by more RAD/Chemo.
