Today I just now noticed a small lump on the side of my tongue. It doesn't hurt and there's no discoloration. My mother suffered from oral cancer back when I was a kid so I don't know if it could be genetics. I'm not sure of what other information to provide, but any feed back would be appreciated.

Any sore that is in your mouth for 2 weeks or longer should be checked by a professional. It could turn out to be all kinds of things so try to not worry and if its still there in 2 weeks get checked. You may want to begin making a few calls next week due to the holidays doctors may have some different office hours. Seek out an ENT (ear, nose and throat specialist) who specializes in oral cancer.

As far as I know at this time it has not yet been proven for oral cancer to be something you can get passed down to you.

Best wishes!!!

If it's been there for more than two weeks, it's best to get it checked out. Don't put off seeing an ENT specialist. My son put off seeing someone for several months, until his SCC (Squamous Cell Cancer) on the side of his tongue got to Stage 2. You can save a lot of time and worrying over what it could be by just finding and ENT with a lot of experience with Oral Cancer patients. It could turn out to be nothing serious, but if it is, then you can start taking care of it right away. Hope it turns out to be nothing serious, but if it is, then you've come to the right place for lots of information and support from some very knowledgeable and compassionate people. Let us know what happens.
