Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 151 | I have read ideas for preparing for the PET scan but now when I need them I can't seem to find them when searching. Any ideas? I remember lots of water and low carbs or sugar I think?? Won't be easy since I am cooking and baking for 50 guests on Sunday night and the PET scan is Monday at 11 so my husband will have to say NO to the sweets. Bad timing for his 6 month scan, especially with the holidays coming.
Husband diagnosed Oct '11 Cancer of the vocal cord Nov '11 removed right vocal cord. Neck Dissection, cancer in one node, .2, very small & contained) Jan '12 Radiation and Cisplatin, 6 doses. June '12 & Dec '12 clear Pet scan. April '13 Celebrating 1 year cancer free since treatment ended.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | You husband should rest the day before and the day of the test, drink lots of water. Avoiding carbs and sugar is important to help avoid false positives. Much better to skip the sweets than go thru the horrors of thinking you are having a recurrance due to the PET lighting up. Off the top of my head there may be one or 2 other things I missed but these are the big ones.

It goes into a lot more detail and restrictions than my CCC gave me, but that probably explains why I had so many false positives. Remember the PET just measures sugar uptake so the dietary restrictions are important: Petscan prep I always found the no alcohol and no caffeine and no exercise the hardest. But just buy some "hard cheeses" for your hubby to nibble on. wow- 50 guests - we did not even have that many at our wedding -Charm

The only thing I can add is that if your blood glucose level is over 200 they may not do the test, until it goes lower. As mentioned, a low carbohydrate diet 12 hrs before...vegetables are all carbs, so choose ones that are low on the glycemic index. I even heard no exercise 2 days before the exam, and no heavy lifting. Avoid excessive taking before the test, crossing legs, and no talking during the scan,, except if necessary, and try not swallowing, moving mouth either during the test since these can show up as uptake. An hour before the test drink 16 ounces of water, if directed, or may be told to do it before you come in, and relax. Stress can also effect glucose, and thus effects the PET scan.

Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 3,082 | Yep, all these rules and precautions are yet another reason, both my doctors and I prefer MRI's over Petscans. Zero preparation, zero dietary or exercise restrictions, no muss or fuss and zero false positives. My kind of test.

Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 1,406 | I find that it's very tough to hang on through the test if I've drunk a lot of water beforehand. Maybe it's just me. One time I even had to stop the scan because I couldn't hold it anymore. Luckily we were 95% through it so didn't have to repeat!

R) level 2-4 neck dissection 8/1/11 to remove residual node - necrotic with NED
Feb '12 Ca back.. 3/8/12 total glossectomy/laryngectomy/bilat neck dissection/partial pharyngectomy etc. clear margins. All nodes negative for disease. PEG in.
March 2017 - 5 years disease free. Woohoo!
