Hi. John had a root canal done years ago on an upper tooth. The tooth started bothering him a couple of months ago. John went to the dentist who referred him to the Endodontist (sp). He put him on an antibiotic and opened up the canal to let the infection drain. He has seen the Endo twice after this. Today he went for the 3rd time and the tooth has not settled down and the Endo said the root is fractured and the tooth is going to have to come out.

John finally has a wonderful Oral Surgeon (thanks Anita!) who is fully aware that John will need HBO dives before the extraction. I'm just looking for some 1st hand information from people who have gone through this and what exactly is involved.

John owns his own business and now through the end of the year is his busiest time and he is reluctant to get started with this. Thanks for any help.

What he will need is called the Marx Protocol. Its 20 dives prior and 10 after extraction.

Most facilities have individual glass cylinders the patient lies in breathing pressurized oxygen. Its not a big deal at all, but it is time consuming as dives for this are usually each about 2 hours long. Prior and after every single dive a patients blood pressure and pulse are checked.

The patient may need to have tubes put in their ears so the pressure doesnt cause ear issues. Thats also not a big deal, is out patient surgery.

Ive done 125 of the HBO dives at 2 different facilities. Each one was top notch with excellent caring staff. The first nurse that ran the HBO facility put things very simply by saying "if you werent born with it, it doesnt go into the tank with you". This means, no perfume, body lotion, nail polish, eyeglasses or contacts, hair ties, books, pens, kindles, cell phones, etc.

You can watch tv and take a plastic water bottle in. I watched the whole Soprano's series. Many places will have DVD players so you can bring your own movies to watch. I usually would fall asleep as its very relaxing hearing the fan run.

Ive had excellent results and credit it with what it took to heal my extensive post surgery wounds. It even cured the arthritis I used to have in my lower back.

Best wishes with HBO.
