Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 225 | Same as the boys at school, I presume, although the info below outlines what was initiated in 2007 for girls and women (up to age 26). I haven't heard anything about men under 26 having subsidised access. My 2 boys (18 and 16) are about to have their 3rd dose (of the 3 dose course), which, after a rebate from my private health fund, will cost about $A480 - cheap at the price, I reckon, but prohibitive for some, I'm sure. At their age, I'm not waiting, but Simon and our family are so pleased that it now available for boys as well as girls, correcting this stunning inequity.

Still not clear on this. Are these young people part of a publicly funded vax program, and if not, can people over 26 access the vaccine (even if they have to pay)?

Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,844 | No Sam it's not publicly funded, they have to pay for it either out of pocket or through insurance, but don't get me started on the broken mess that is the US' health system. Our medical experts believe that after 26 you've already been exposed to HPV so they won't prescribe it as you've probably already been exposed, and the effectiveness of the vaccine is greatly reduced once you have been exposed, limiting its usefulness.
