FIL is back in hospital for pneumonia again, he has not had chemo since JUNE because the drs said it would hinder instead of help at that point.....now he has been in hospital 5 days, he has MRSA and pneumonia and tumors in his lungs.....he can hardly breathe but he truly does look better,

his mucus is bright green and extremey thick, they took 3 jars fluid off his lungs 2 days ago........

encologist wants to start him back up on chemo tomorrow....it just seems he has so much against him that I cannot see how this will help him? it seems like too much for his lungs to take? He also has COPD, asthma and allergies....

dr came in at midnight to see him so we do not know how blunt he was with him....maybe he told him this is his only chance? That i dont know....

Anyhow has anyone gone thru pneumonia and chemo at same time? thanks for all help

I am so sorry to hear about your FIL. The poor man has been thru so much. Maybe the hospital is him medications to make him more comfortable. When someone's immune system is compromised and their white counts are very low, they can be given shots to boost it back up. Im not sure what the medication is called, I was given these shots once and felt immediately better.

I hope your FIL improves a little more every day.

marisa, so sorry to read this. we've been battling fevers but it has not progressed into pneumonia. i can tell you his 6th of 7 chemo treatment was postponed due to low white count and fevers, my dad is 78 and the dr wanted to be cautious. there seems to be a number they shoot for in chemo infusion mgs, in my dad's case it was 200 mgs of cysplatin and he had that amount over 5 infusions which his dr said satisfied him, although they will try for the last treatment if his white count improves. perhaps ask you dr about this? it was confusing for my dad to understand, but in short, his chemo had a "minimum baseline requirement of 200 mgs over the course of treatment"

change that: it now is pneumonia, he's in a local hospital waiting to be transferred to his CCC/hospital. re the waiting: we are not pleased.

hope things are better on your side.
