Whose amazing "biography" of cancer "The Emperor of All Maladies" just won the Pulitzer. I recently finished it: an astonishing book by a gifted writer. And the guy just happens to be an oncologist and researcher at Columbia University. In his spare time I guess.

Check out the link. And better yet, read the book!

Dr. Gillison and I both just finished this book. It is a great book. I think it has an appeal to someone that isn't working or living in the world of cancer as well.

Don't forget that if you decide to pick up a copy of it, to use the OCF link at the top of the forums page.... Amazon donates 4% of all your purchases to OCF, as long as you use our link EACH TIME that you enter their site. Amazon just about pays our phone bill every month.... tell or send your friends about the link, and maybe one day we can pay our rent on them too!!

Another good read is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Good tip, Brian, and I agree. Anyone in possession of a human body (and who likes to read non-fiction) would do well to read Dr. Mukherjee's magnum opus. I don't doubt that both of you thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't buy a great deal on Amazon, but when I do it's always through the OCF portal. I'll check out your recommendation.

Bringing this back up with a new interview from Salon on Dr SM
Here's some quotes to pique your interest:
For patients, the idea that this is a war makes them foot soldiers in that war. To not survive is to become a loser, a casualty. Most patients don't want to be soldiers and casualties or losers. War inevitably sets up the rhetoric that you either win or lose.

As a doctor, I was particularly interested in the tension you describe between patient advocates and the medical community. Can you talk about that?

We need patient advocates, they are crucial. That said, there are natural tensions.
When this topic and mention of the book "The Emperor of all Maladies" first appeared, I did get the book and read this amazing account of the history of cancer. The other book that Brian mentioned, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", I put on my list of books to read but it was not until I received a notice from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, that it came to mind again. The author of this book, Rebecca Skloot, will be giving a lecture at my University this coming Monday! I downloaded the E-Book and am in the middle of reading it right now, - hopefully will be finished by Monday when I attend the lecture. Henrietta Lacks' cells were biopsied, showing signs of immortality, multiplying continually, and have been used in medical research worldwide. There will probably be time for questions, so if anyone can think of specific questions I should ask, let me know and I will do my best to get them in. You can get the book at Amazon thru OCF. It's only $6.97 and the E-Book is $9.99. Just go to the top of this page, click on "Forums", then Amazon.
