In reading the posts by a Danish medical student on this forum, I was disappointed to read slurs on Dr. Maura Gillison and her HPV research because of a connection with a drug company as though that invalidated the results of her study. If that is the case, then I guess his medical education (will be invalidated. Of course this is just one study but then using the apparent Danish medical student criteria of one study is enough, here goes
Sponsorship deals decide what students learn in Denmark
by Luci Ellis

Danish medical students reading materials are biased towards commercial sponsors. This is according to a recently published University of Copenhagen (U of C) study quoted on the Canadian cardiology website theheart.org.

The study, conducted by Dr Andreas Lundh and Dr Peter C Gtzsche from U of Cs Department of Health Services Research, showed that 15 per of all medical textbooks written in Danish had one or more commercial sponsors, and that in several cases sponsors had attempted to influence content.

Lundh and Gtzsche reviewed all textbooks written in Danish available for clinical courses at the University of Copenhagen in December 2007.
Sponsors influence content

I don't think, if you go ten years back, that the prevalence was this high. I think it's something where the practice has just seeped in, says Lundh.

The researchers uncovered two cases in which sponsors had attempted to influence the content of the textbooks.

In one case, different sponsoring companies had contacted the editor five times and asked him to contact the authors with specific questions regarding recommendations for the choice of drugs, explains Lundh.
Students not trained to criticise texts

The study reveals a widespread lack of transparency in sponsorship practices.

10 of the 71 texts reviewed listed one or more sponsors, and one additional book was sponsored but had no mention of the sponsorship in the book itself.

Only one of the sponsored books described the role of the sponsor.

This is, according to Lundh, particularly problematic as students tend to take the contents of textbooks at face-value, as medical students are not trained in how to critically appraise literature, and are therefore very liable to commercial influences.
Tough market

Lundh does not know whether the practice of sponsorship of medical textbooks is as common in English-speaking countries as it is in Denmark, and he speculates whether the tough market conditions for Danish textbook publishers could be at the root of the issue.

The publication business in Denmark is very hard; you compete with English textbooks, which have a lower cost, so it could be very tempting for publication companies to get a book sponsored, he says.
Now if only Merck has thought ahead to sponsor a Danish medical textbook,;)

@Charm and David: You are both very wise and astute men!

@Charm: Great insight into how to spin an education--sponsorship! And, medical degrees shouldn't be hatched by drug companies sitting on them! Frightening.

Nothing like building a market for your products by programming the prescribers...brilliant and devious, among other descriptives.

Speaking of sponsorship, Danish students pay zero tuition for their medical school education. At their website, the University of Copenhagen medical school spells it out
Full-degree students from an EU/EEA country or students in an exchange programme, will usually have their higher education in Denmark provided free of charge. The tuition fees are paid by the State
To get into Danish Medical school, it does not look like you have to take competitive medical boards or exams like USA:
applicants must document an academic degree corresponding to at least a Danish BSc degree within a relevant academic field. Previous study, participation in research projects, international experience and grades are all taken into account.
For medicine, you also must be fluent in Danish and pass a test on English as a second language. While there are more details are on their Danish website, it was too tedious to use online translators to find out that Interviews med studerende is not interviews of medical students but interview with students.

Last but not least as one medical residents' web site puts it:
Virtually all MDs in Denmark are organized in a
national Danish medical union. The young doctors
have their own section negotiating working
conditions with employers. Because of the high level
of organisation there are generally very pleasant
working conditions such as a 37-hour work week
(calls included), a decent salary, 6 weeks of vacation
per year, excellent child- and sick leave benefits, and
a pension plan.
A great side benefit of OCF forum is learning just how different countries handle their health care.
