My husband Mike will be 2 years post treatment this coming March. Stage three, 1 right side lymph node, no primary.

His voice got very hoarse this summer, clear PET, but ENT found growth on left side vocal cord.

Got it removed, path report was "mild dysplasia", not cancer.

ENT explained that the dysplasia can be caused by the radiation, but we all no that dysplasia can be a precursor to what we don't want.

Mike is hoarse again, went to ENT yesterday, the damn thing is back in the same spot from where it was removed from in August.

Good news is the ENT said it does not look like a cancer looks; it is smooth. So another surgery to take it out and biopsy it in the next 2 weeks.

Of course, I'm wondering is it caused by the radiation or is it something "bad" trying to grow there?

Has anyone ever had such a thing occur; and did it reoccur more than once but never amount to anything?

All replies will be appreciated, and please (not that you wouldn't) be honest.

Thank You.

Jessica

Jessica,
No real answer here but my husband had a "suspect looking" area on the same tonsil they radiated.
Underwent a biopsy and the pathology came back clear.
Just another gift from the radiation.
Does his 1 yr PET this month.

Keep a sharp eye on it. Four years out of my original diag, I had a 4 month old hoarse throat diagnosed as cancer of the larynx. Mine was buried in fold in the esophagus so could not be detected until under anesthesia. CT did not even find it. I don't want to scare you, but voice changes and sore throat can be signs of cancer. Pursue this actively. I also strongly suspect second cancer was caused by radiation damage.

Taake care,
Eileen
