I have had my feeding tube since my surgery in March. I was hoping to have it out in July. But ended up having a second surgery to remove a mass from the base of my tongue. It did came back precancerous. But now I been declared cancer free.

Now getting back to the feeding tube. The ones that have them. Do you get drainage from the area It goes into the body. With me I get a lot of drainage and the smell of it not pleasant . The smell is just like if you have the stomach flu. Is this normal for it to drain like this? I do use IV gauze and IV tape around the wound. But it seems to getting more drainage.

One good thing that has come out of this in 3 1/2 years I have dropped over 100 pounds. Not a diet program I would recommended.

Please let me know if its normal on the feeding tube. Hoping now to get it out next month.

Round 1 5/2007 - 35 Rad treatments and 6 chemo of cisplatin

I had my feeding tube in for 2 months. I had drainage that almost looked like mucous. I had to change my gauze every day, sometimes 2 times a day due to drainage. I would talk to your doctor about it though just to make sure it's not infected. I know I contracted c-diff when they put mine in and I was in the hospital for 5 days after they put it in. Docs didn't catch the c-diff until after they removed my tube because i ended up with pneumotosis intestinalis which is very rare to get when you're "healthy" and never had any bowel problems before.
Not saying it is c-diff, but could be something else, cuz it's pretty easy for bacteria and other nastyness to get in there.
I also cleaned my site one to two times a day, and had to put a steroid gel around it due to a rash I got.
But if you are concerned talk with your doctor.
Best of luck and keep us updated, laugh. I know what you mean about the weight loss, i lost almost 70 lbs. Was all muscle which is sad, but that's what happens when you can't get out of bed, and aren't eating enough calories.
Take care

Hey, I hope you can get rid of the feeding tube also. I just noticed your signature line indicating that you had TPN or Total Parental Nutrition. I had to google it to find out it meant having an IV directly into the vein instead of the tube into the stomach like most of us had. Ouch. I'm guessing the regular feeding tube is better?
Anyway, I still get a discharge from my G tube after 18 months, but it does not smell. I do dab the stoma regularly with OTC triple antiseptic cream and that has prevented any infections.
If you have a J tube, I'll leave that to Christine as I don't know what's normal for that, just the G tube into the stomach.

I have a small amount of drainage too, maybe 1/4 teaspoon daily at the most. Its not smelly or a big deal. I use drain sponges and some antibiotic cream around the site and have no problems with it.

My tube is a J/G tube which has the main feeding part connected right past my stomach and inside the tube is another very skinny tube that goes into my stomach. The top is 3 pronged with the third part being for a needle to give meds.

If your tube is too loose then you would have more drainage. Best of luck with being able to have it removed.
