I was wondering if anyone has or is using Ethyol during radiation? How bad are the SEs and how effective is Ethyol?

Ethyol is the trade name for amifostine. Do a search for either term in the search box in the upper right corner of each forum page -- lots of results.

April 2006: Husband dx by dentist with leukoplakia on tongue. Oral surgeon's biopsy 4/28/06: Moderate dysplasia; pathology report warned of possible "skip effect." ENT's excisional biopsy (got it all) 5/31/06: SCC in situ/small bit superficially invasive. Early detection saves lives.

I had Amifostine daily for all of my radiation treatments, and it really wasn't too bad. They would make sure Radiation would be ready for me on time, and give it immediately before I went down to the Radiation Lab. I would have some transient nausea that would hit at almost exactly the same time every day -- just about 5 minutes after I completed radiation and was walking to the car. Lasted about 15 minutes, but was gone by the time I got home.

As to how effective Amifostine is, I really couldn't say, because I don't know what my saliva situation would have been without it. I lost my two submandibular glands to neck dissection, so was challenged from the start. However, today, 3 years exactly from the day my biopsy results came back, I can eat anything, though winters are tougher than the rest of the year.

Good luck to your brother.

I took it through most of my treatments. I had no nausea issues but had to stop for the last 10 treatments because of skin rashes. The rashes were not that bad and I felt OK with continuing, but the doctor and a specialist said that the rashes can get out of hand real fast.

I have fairly good saliva. I'm 5 months out and still get some dry mouth, but I can eat almost anything as long as I have something to drink around.
