I often thought I should "reintroduce" myself since so many things have happened since my first post under this forum, not the least of which was the Cancer coming back BIG time and needing disfiguring surgery which also stripped me of my ability to swallow plus imposed a PEG upon me against my will.

I urge all new comers who first post on this "Introduce Yourself" forum to take a gander at the excellent factual information that OCF provides on its main web page. It is a distillation of the wisdom of the OCF forum combined with hard science. I confess it is usually not until Brian Hill posts a link to a particular page that I read it, but hey, do as I say, not as I do smile

Primarily, I want to take this opportunity to explain my signature line. Now please, newcomers, take a few minutes and develop a signature line. I think that a thousand of DavidCPA;s posts have been to GENTLY REMIND new posters of the importance and utility of a signature line here on OCF. Most first posters go naked. It's not hard, just fill it out when you register and you can easily update it as things change.

Now after a surprising number of PMs on this subject, I am going to set the record straight on why my signature line says I am an "Old Frack"
Old Frack has a two party story
Part one Battlestar Galatica (BSG)was a sci fi show set involving spaceships & cyborgs etc which used the word "Frack" in all its dialogue as the futuristic version of our more common 4 letter anglo saxon verb.It was a way to let the characters all use obscenity in most of their scenes without having to bleep it plus it neatly avoided the censors while being blatantly obvious. It was named by Rolling Stone as the best TV show last year and the cast was even invited to the United Nations to make a presentation on human rights.
Part two was a bit by George Carlin, the now deceased 60s comedian who had lots of funny bits including in 1972 "7 Words you can Never Say on TV" which ended up in a famous 1978 US Supreme Court case in which a narrow 54 decision by the justices affirmed the government's power to regulate indecent material on the public airwaves. Up until his death last year, he still did TV specials and one of them I saw was where he ranted that he was tired of young people calling him an "OLD FART", that he was instead an "OLD F**K"
While I loved it, I did not think the OCF board would really be the place to use even the asterisked version above. So I settled on OLD FRACK, since it had been deemed acceptable by even the United Nations.
I was delighted beyond belief to hear that a Google search on "Old Frack" brings up my OCF posts as the number one result.

That's not the answer you gave me. This explains it all.

Since OLD FRACK is taken, I guess I Have to be OLD FART.

If you read my posts, I too an avid friend of BSG and the thinking persons story line that got me addicted to the show and the Frack word, I still use it today with people w/o thinking, and many of them do not understand. The sequel (actually prequel) series Caprica starts in a week or two on the SiFi channel, using the same writing team, I am confident that frack will continue to be the convention, replacing again the more common F word.

On that note, I had one of those days today when everything was all fraked up. I came out from Starbucks on the way to work, to find out that some stupid frack, driving a big fraking Escalade, had opened his door, and having to step way down to the ground because of his 22" inch fraking ghetto wheels, lost control of his door and put a fraking dent in the side of my car. FRACK!

Now the truth comes out. I have new word that I can use now. Like, I hate this fracking disease. Thanks, I will be using it and my husband will know what it means because he love BG. I never did get into it. Oops! Thanks for explaining to us how you became old frack.

Brian and Charm - and anyone else that wants to understand what BSG is all about - take a look at this - think you'll get a kick out of it!

I love this video - starts with an explanation of "frack", Key phrases "Bad Boomer", "Hot Ceylon" etc! Enjoy!

thanks so much for the BSG refresher. I had forgotten about the future anti-cancer drug that was not only hallucinogenic but gave you accurate visions of the future. Too bad my MO was not able to prescribe that for me. wink

I'll share that my first experience with you Charm and I'm sure you remember it as well, I knew I'd found someone very much like myself. I'm glad to count you among the heroes of mine on these forums and a fellow Frack!

We are men of action, as hard as nails and the disfigurement only adds to our warriors image! A guy saw me in the gym and said "man, it looks like you've been through some shit! Was it Irag?" Just think of the stories we can tell!

A variation on that comment has come in several forms to me. You look like you came out second place in a knife fight..... You look like you've been shit at and hit (by a friend and said in true jest).

Ain't that the truth. I can say without fear of contradiction that being MALE has a distinct advantage when it comes to scars. I really feel for all the female OCF members who have undergone what you, I & Eric have endured. At least we can laugh about it easily. Our sisters at OCF do not have it so easy.
Although my PEG with the Y extender dangling at the gym does elicit many more comments than my Frankenstein neck scars.
Good to hear from you

Charm,
My husband appreciated my new word "frack." I told himt hat I was going to use that word from now on. He was all for is. He said that is from Battlestar Gallatica, and I can use it anytime I want to. I have been calling all the stuff a "Sh&^ sandwich" Now i am going to call it a "Fracken sandwich". smile

So THAT'S what it means!
I intereviewed Dirk Benedict in the early 1990s. He visited local schools to deliver a "stay in school & study" message.

BSG didn't stay in my memory bank. Call me frackin' nuts, but I thought the show was cheesy. Still, I now have a new word to use.

The original BSG was beyond cheesy. It was "Bonanza" goes to the Stars. It didn't use Frack. Interestingly enough, Dirk Benedick's character in the original BSG, Starbuck, was played by a woman in the BSG we are talking about. I have to admit I liked Dirk better as Face in the A Team then in the old BSG. Especially after he gave bitter interviews castigating the gender switch of his old BSG character and suggested her name should be StarDoe.

Hi, Charm -
So we *are* talking different shows ! I didn't want to offend all you BSG fans, but it was awful. I don't recall the female Starbuck, & there's not enough hours in the week to catch up on something I wasn't interested in to begin with(& I love scifi). So, I'll just be happy with the slang expressions.

It's like comparing a student recital to a Kennedy Center performance talking about the original and re-imagined BSG.
No time excuses here. Since you and others may not have scrolled back one page to GinnyM's excellent utube link on the new BSG, I am bumping it up new BSG It's under 9 minutes and covers all but the last season.

hell the last episode was unbelievable, it was the perfect end to amazingly complex characters. Cerebral, philosophical, theological. It was some of the best ideas converted into a TV show ever. A clip that misses the portrayal of the essence of humankind is not going to convey the brilliant writing of this staff. Clearly the comments of an obsessed, bordering on stalker fan.

I use to watch BSG as a young kid! I forgot about all those shows--the cheesy ones! BSG, A-Team, Knight Rider, Fall Guy, Mork and Mindy--remember when they hatched their baby!! Jonathon Winters as the child! I still can't believe that show was a spin off from Happy Days--well--so was Joni and Chachi. Funny though, when I see reruns of Miami Vice that show looks cheesy too and I thought was a great show back in the day.
