I am four weeks post-treatment, but had been receiving in-home hydration and eating via PEG tube. I've finally turned the corner and believe that is behind me now. However, I have extra supplies that the home healthcare folks won't take back - say they can't send them out again even though everything is still sealed.

I have about 6L of saline bags, lots of saline and heparin flush syringes, IV tubing, empty syringes and other assorted needles. If I stay on track it looks like I'll also have 4 cases of Jevity 1.2 leftover.

Does anyone know of any organizations that would accept a donation of any of this? I'm in the Chicago area.

PS - I've been a lurker for several months and appreciate all the good info that's helped me along the way. Thanks all!

Hi, trvin, this is a subject that I think is very important because I HATE waste! I gave all of our unused supplies to our Home Health Nurse Company. They will give them to indigent patients they are caring for. I also gave several cases of peg nutrients[ 2Cal HN in our case-Jevity in your case] to the Oncologist to give to patients in need that he was caring for. Also, the Nursing homes in our area will accept the things you listed, if they are sealed. When I totaled up the "Ins. co. value: ie- what they allowed on the EOBs" of the things we did not use and gave away, it was well over $2000.00. This does not count the stuff I had bought, gauze, special bandages for bed sores, drain pads, chucks, etc., etc. By the way, I also shipped several cases of 2CalHN to other OCF members during the 2 years we were dealing with this. So please don't pitch your stuff- it can be put to goood use. Amy in the Ozarks

I have given our "leftovers" to the same people as Amy above - what they couldn't take I donated to our local SPCA and my vet as well as my daughter who works at a large equine facility in PA.

A local nursing home was so excited when I called about 20 unopened cases of liquid food, that they offered to have people come pick it up. They told me that they like to send cans with people who are headed home, as they are a temporary stop for people recovering from illness who have no one at home to care for them. My insurance had already paid for it and I didn't ever want to see it again, so it was a good deal for everyone.

The local hospice society would probably appreciate them as well and will give you a tax deductible receipt for the donation.

I sometimes give the extra saline and things to my wife to take to the college for the nursing classes as well. I have MS also so I always end up with a ton of extra things when I use a home health. Thanks for the other ideas to everyone. Lee
