Im thinking you saw a dentist because of being checked with a velscope. After having a sore in your mouth for 2 or 3 weeks or more then you are correct, it should be checked by a professional. You want to be seen by an ENT who treats oral cancer patients. They should be most familiar with not just cancer but other mouth abnormalities. Your sore could be any number of things besides cancer. Hopefully its something not serious.
As far as the smoking and drinking goes... QUIT! All those chemicals is not helping to heal your spot. There are too many known cancer causing additives in cigarettes. Heck, even the e-cigs (most owned by big tobacco companies) contain harmful ingredients. Alcohol will only irritate your mouth so avoid it.
Leave the sore alone! By touching it (even with your tongue) you could be irritating it and making it harder for the sore to heal.
Please let us know how you make out. Good luck!!!
