My brother survived Stage 3 squamous cell tongue cancer that spread to his lymph nodes 7 years ago. He was treated with surgery and radiation. He's 43 today and oral cancer has recurred. Stage 1, I think, in his gums and jawbone. Radical surgery was just completed and 3 back lower molars + piece of jawbone were removed. Jaw was replaced with bone from his leg.

He's recovering well but just received pathology report that states there are some cells in tissue margins. He will be advised next week as to whether he should have additional surgery or radiation to clean up last bit.

When he was radiated 7 years ago he was told that he couldn't receive any more radiation in his lifetime. So we're surprised this is an option, but do trust his doctors.

Here's my question, and I would be very grateful for any experience, stories, or input.

1)can you provide any information on experience of re-radiation for a head and neck cancer?

2) can you provide any information on risk to his newly installed jawbone, given that radiation destroys DNA - how will it effect a bone graft in area to be radiated?

3) Any general advice on dealing with the horrific experience of oral radiation would also be welcome.

Thanks for any ideas, or referrels.
