I am now 4 months out from combined radio/chemotherapy (cisplatin) and am not able to take any solids. The most I can manage is thin soup. Anything remotely solid (even banana mush) gets stuck in my throat and I get a reaction where my palate becomes bumpy and painful. Anybody have similar experience/can offer any tips?

Hello Chris,

If you don't have a peg tube you might want to ask your doctor about one. You need to input enough nutrition to heal and maintain your weight.
Some go without one and do fine. If you can't get anything down orally you will lose alot of weight. The peg tube has been discussed many times on this forum. You can go to the search engine at the top of the page and research this issue.

Healing from radiation comes at diffrents rates for diffrent ppl. I finished in mid May and just had my peg tube removed since im eating well. I too had the problem of food being caught in my throat but in time and relearning how to eat and the tounge will heal you will get past this stage very soon. Try other foods like pudding and mashed potatoes and see how those work. Like everything else that radiation does, it takes time, time, time. Good luck

Chris, I'm 2 ansd 1/2 months out and my palate is still bumpy and painful *all the time* and all I can get down is iced tea. I just saw my oral surgeon, dentist and ENT last week and they all said that people heal at different rates and you just have to be patient.

I hate that answer, but my guess is the same applies in your case. if it helps at all, I'm in the same boat and I totally get your frustration!

Chris and Nelie, have you tried melted ice cream shakes? Maybe you could tolerate something cold if it is very liquid. Amy

Chris

I am three weeks out of RT and just starting eating after to many weeks 5 I think of having an NG tube. The tube was horried but saved my life.

I have lost 13kgs but feel better for it and feel happy with my weight at 79/80kgs which has been consistant for 2 weeks.

I have started by getting protein in first to aid healing but with a juicer I have been able to eat melon juice, carrot juice, weetabix, scambled eggs, loads of complan and build up drinks. I can also eat pasta and have blended mash and sweet pots as well. I have heard of egg custard, and eating the egg off egg custards and the cheese element to cheesecake.

I have also eaten other stuff with the aid of drinking water.

I hope this helps.
