Just keep a supply of Aquafor on hand to pu on your mom's lips. They will get dry and bother her after she has had a couple of rads and don't be afraid to use it. I healed in 2 weeks after rads and chemo combo. But those lips sure did bother me for a few days.

Time for a new update. My mom has completed all but 3 radiation sessions. She has alot of pain on her tongue from sores, she has also lost her taste. Any recommendations on what might help her pain. She was offered liquid vicodin, but she didn't want to take it. She has seen people get addicted to pain pills, so i think she a afraid. I told her that she does not have an addictive personality so she should use it to get some relief, but so far she has not. She also wanted to know if anyone knows about know about going in cloranated water during and after radiation.

Thanks
Sherri

Sherri:

Right now and the next couple weeks are the worst time of your mom's treatments. She needs pain meds. Ask her doc for the fentanyl patch, its easy and will give her a constant flow of pain meds. There is no reason for her to suffer when pain meds are available.

I also was reluctant to take pain meds. I had a wonderful nurse who explained that there is no reason to hurt after going thru so much. It will help the body to heal by easing the pain so she can rest.

It will get better very soon. Best of luck to you both.

I had to stop taking all my pain meds because of the complications they created with me and it wasn't fun so I hope she can find something that works for her. Tell her to stop worrying about the addiction chance and get the relief.

Sherri, I was hesitant to take pain meds too but I couldn't have gotten through the end of my tyreatment without them. If it's any reassurance to your mom, most research shows that if you're taking pain meds for cancer or cancer treatment pain, you aren't very likely to get addicted--you just want to get of of them ASAP!

The only reason I quit taking pain meds is the constipation they gave me. I sometime think about taking a pain pill then get to thinking about the stomache cramps from them and back off. Tell her to take them if they are OK with her stomache.
