Hi, I do not want to scare anyone here, and I am sure this is unusual but I have had a lot of operations even before cancer, c-sections and stuff, I never remembered anything from the first relaxant and I confused confused am very groggy and takes me awhile to wake up. Well after this last one I can remember being held down on the table and someone was pushing a tube down my throat. I tried to get away or yell but could not, I heard a nurse say she something and that was it. Then I remember someone saying stuff about my blood pressure getting really high. This could have been in recovery and not even me, but the other was me and in the operating room. I had stitches taken out today and my Doctor is away at a conferance so I told the two residents who did my appointment. One had been in the operating room, he said he did not notice any problem but this may be before they came in. I will bring it up with my ENT next week. What could have happened?Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?I know I am not imagineing it, I have done this too many times to not know this was different. Do I forget it , or make a fuss?

Hi,
This has happened to Heather. When she had her PEG tube inserted, it was to be a "twilight" anesthetic, so she would be awake, but not aware. Well, she was definitely aware. She said it was like she was wide awake. She saw and heard everything they did.

When she was 7 and had her tonsils out, the stuff they gave her to relax her instead did the opposite and she was bouncing off the walls. And after her surgery last September, when they gave her Adavan (sp?), instead of helping her to sleep, she had nightmares and was hallucinating. According to the doctor, she had what is called a paradoxical reaction. I'm sure it's more complicated, but I think basically it means you get a reaction opposite to what is expected.

I don't have an explanation as to why this happened to you now and not before, but I wonder if they used a different med this time. I would definitely let the doctor know and make note of what med it was, so you know for the next time.

Rainbows & hugs, wink
Rosie

Hi, You are right Rosie I need to tell them so can be alert to this since I have to have more surgerys. This was started at in-out surgery since I would only be in for one day, most of my surgerys where in the BIG pre-op where its very serious because they are getting ready for a long surgery. In and out more relaxed, well maybe toooo relaxed this time , but your right since most of my work will be plastic surgery now I will go thru In-Out and I do not want this to happen again! I think about you and Heather often and she is always in my prayers.Bless you.

G,
Every time I have had my esophagus dilated, in addition to the demerol, they give me versed, which is the stuff that makes you forget. I remember nothing after they start the medication and even have problems remembering the ride home after I wake up. I wish that it worked as well for all of us.

One of those things that happens sometimes, need to tell the docs about it, especially the anesthetic guy.

Before the cancer sugery the only other surgery I'd had under a general anesthetic was dental work, once for biopsy once for having all 4 wisdom teeth pulled.

Actually slightly woke up during both surgerys. Remember some of the dental work and the doc stitching me up after the biopsy. Doc said I took almost twice as much anashetic as normal.

So, one needs to make the anethetic doc aware if you're having this problem.

Hi, Saw my ENT today, you have to be careful what you ask him because he WILL give you the answer. I said i do not think they put me out enough when you did this operation. He said I told them you were going to remember you were to alert! He said this is the safe way to do this, semi alert they put tubes and trach etc. in, then knock you out. They give you versed to make you forget.(Thanks for that word Danny). The Doctor said make sure i tell them next time that I remembered a lot from the operation. Not enough versed the problem. My Doctor is so excited about me. Every thing is in line and no infection. The inside of my mouth is so normal one would not guess it is from all other parts of my body. Actuall my foot is the only thing I do not have in my mouth, but I guess will work on that myself.Sorry, had to do that.I will have to wait 3 months or more before we can move on to plastic surgery. The metal bar need to grow flesh in and around it. It feels good to know no one will be messing with me for three months or more.A nice quiet summer I hope. For all of us.

I am so happy to hear that you are doing well. I have been following your posts and agree that the Versed was the problem. Easy to fix, but hopefully not needed again for a long time, and this time only for plastic surgery. Sounds like you are on the road to recovery and I am sure you are VERY VERY happy about that. I know from this site that alot of other people are happy for you too, as am I. Conitinued success in your treatment and best wishes for a Fun-filled, uneventful summer!!!!

Hi G.Nelson....I can not imagine remembering my surgery! YIKES! That scares the heck out of me! Will make a mental note of the versed problem. You sound so good, upbeat, happy...and no more surgery for at least 3months. It will indeed be a wonderful summer! Best wishes for quick healing and a delightful summer. Sincerely, Donna
