hello again, well my father is being treated for an infection.. he had his surgery on december 7, at was looking really good up until about 1.5weeks ago.. so we took him in to see the ENT and he said looks like infection.. both sides were swollen, red and warm.. left side now looks a lot better, but right side doesnt seem to be going down as much and looks a little red, almost like a sunburn.. no fever, pain is under control, has not had any pain pills, and is on the 50mcg patch, and has actually asked about going down to the 25.. has anyone experienced this redness and swelling on just one side? also, i also came across a discussion where a gentlemen was actually allergic to the titanium in the plate.. any thoughts or feedback would be great..

thank you and God bless
nicki

Sorry to hear about your father struggling with the infection. Of course everybody is different. I just gotta say that. I had a difficult time due to my body rejecting the titanium jaw. This happened about 7-10 days after the surgery. Sorry but I cant be sure since I was kept in a medically induced coma for 3 weeks. The titanium jaw was removed and the free flap redone. My guess would be if your father's body was going to reject the titanium, he would have developed problems earlier. Best wishes with his recovery. Hope he feels better soon.

Nicki, I had infections at my titanim bar in 4/2007 and in 11/2007 with swelling and redness. My surgery with bar placement was 1/2005. My ENT diagnosed infection at the bar site and ABTs took care of both infections. Each infection occurred after dental cleanings. I do have chronic numbness in my chin. I no longer receive the ultrasonic cleanings. No infections since that time, but unlike your dad's, mine did occur more than two years from surgery. Hope healing with management of side effects proceeds smoothly.

What are "ABT's"? My husband has infection of his titanium plate and I haven't heard that term before.

I think I just realized what 'ABT's" are...anitbiotic treatments...is that right? If so, how long did the antibiotics take to resolve the infection?

Yes, ABT = antibiotic. I had a 21 day course of Biaxin (Clarithromycin) 500 mg twice a day for each infection. There was improvement with decreased redness and swelling within a week of starting the ABT, but I did complete the ABT each time, which is most important.
