Clark's PET/CT was CLEAR!!!!! Woohoo! I had been laying low until we got the test results. Three years ago, we had just entered the world of OC. It has been a long haul. This Monday, December 13th, Clark has his last surgery for his jaw reconstruction. He is having his skin graft debulked in day surgery. He is so ready for this. He tells everyone we meet about his upcoming procedure. While pain is still an issue, he is forging ahead.
We met this young man in the hospital elevator the other day, who had completely recovered from a very bad fall from a roof. He had multiple broken bones, a plate in his skull, and he was the happiest man. He was still in some pain but decided that he would handle it. He was so grateful to be alive, to spend time with his wife and little daughter. I think he inspired Clark because hours later, Clark said, "how about that guy who is in pain but decided to deal with it. That's what I have to do."

Im glad that you met such an inspiring person. Sometimes people like that really make you stop and think of what you are grateful for in life. Sounds like that young man has his priorities in the right order!

Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

You just never know when there will be an angel just around the corner! There was a young man that inspired me and my son, too - that we met in the Rad Tx waiting room. After my son went in for his Tx, I continued to talk to this young man and as he left for his Tx, he said to me, "Check out OralCancerFoundation.org". And that was the best thing this young angel could have said to me!!

Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 701 Likes: 1 | Clark's surgery was successful! He had the skin graft debulked in outpatient surgery. The Plastic Surgeon removed a significant amount of fat and skin that was hanging below his jawline. He then used some of that fat to build up a hollow area that had formed in his cheek over the last few months. Clark has some swelling but there is a noticeable difference and more definition along his jawline. In time when the swelling resolves, I think he will look as close to his BC (before cancer) face as is possible. He has a drain that will be removed on Thursday when we go back for a post op. And he has very little pain!! In fact, he didn't want to fill the rx for the pain med--he didn't need it! Wow, that is a first for us!

Aunt diag. 2/4/10 with SCC Stage I/II on left side of tongue. Surgery 2/19/10 part. gloss./neck diss. on left side/free flap from chest muscle. TI/II,NO,MO. Clear margins with perineural invasion. Started rads 4/8/10 - 35 treatments, finished 5/26/10.

Clark has a lot of swelling so it is hard for him to see a big difference. It will take about 2 months for the swelling to go down. By then, the surgeon will re-evaluate to see if he needs a bit more work.

After my reconstructive surgery in October, everyone kept telling me how much better it looked but I couldnt see it. Even if its a huge difference, its hard to see it. The swelling will go down and hopefully Clark will be satisfied with the results. Im glad to hear the doc said that more could be done later. It sounds like this is an excellent doctor. Did the doc mention doing liposuction? Thats what my plastic surgeon suggested to me since I dont want any more big surgeries.
Congrats to Clark!!! Im sure he will notice a difference very soon.

It is hard for him to see a difference. He is actually more swollen now than right after surgery. The surgeon said it is all normal and that it takes time.
